OEM vs Aftermarket Parts

How parts decisions affect fit, safety systems, and your vehicle's value.

OEM parts are produced by or for the vehicle manufacturer and carry the original part numbers. Aftermarket parts are produced by independent suppliers and are usually less expensive, but quality and fitment vary.

For cosmetic panels the gap is often small. For structural components, sensor brackets, and anything tied to advanced driver assistance systems, OEM parts are frequently specified in the manufacturer's repair procedure.

Insurance policies vary on which type of part is owed. Your declarations page and state regulations both factor in, and many policies allow you to request OEM at additional cost.
